To verify the code, I created a synthetic dataset (n = 100) with three variables: var1, var2, and var3. Given the variety of ways that bootstrapping can be implemented in Stata, I wanted to be sure the approach I’ve described here yields the same end result as the Preacher and Hayes test. See here for an annotated example of the output. The second statement performs a bootstrap analysis, and the third statement reports the bootstrapping results. The first statement performs the regression-based tests of a, b, direct effect, and total effect. The words in ALL CAPS are variable names.

After installing the sgmediation program from within Stata (using a findit sgmediation command from within Stata as described here), the following Stata code will perform a Preacher and Hayes test: sgmediation DEP_VAR, iv(INDEP_VAR) mv(MED_VAR)īootstrap r(ind_eff), reps(5000): sgmediation DEP_VAR, iv(INDEP_VAR) mv(MED_VAR) In essence, to replicate Preacher and Hayes, Stata should be programmed to do bootstrapping with case resampling and a percentile estimate of the confidence interval. What options and approaches should be taken to replicate the Preacher and Hayes test? However, as described here, a wide variety of Stata’s options and approaches to bootstrapping can be applied to sgmediation. In its basic form, sgmediation reports only the normal-based tests (e.g., Sobel), but Stata can be readily instructed to bootstrap the estimates. How can an equivalent test be performed with Stata?Ī partial answer to the problem can be found in the sgmediation program, written by Philip Ender at UCLA. However, the Preacher and Hayes macros will only work with SPSS and SAS. (2010), the Preacher and Hayes test is the most acceptable approach nowadays. A commonly cited solution is the bootstrapping method of Preacher and Hayes (2004) they provide SPSS and SAS macros that perform a bootstrapping test of the indirect effect. However, the statistical tests of the indirect effect described in Baron and Kenny (i.e., Sobel and its variants) are now known to be inappropriate. Regression-based tests of a, b, the direct effect, and the total effect are acceptable. The currently acceptable method is to directly test the total effect, direct effect, and indirect effect (i.e., mediated effect) of an independent variable.
In this post, I provide Stata code for performing the Preacher and Hayes test.Īmong journal reviewers in my field, there was a time that the most accepted test for mediation was Baron and Kenny (1986). Those statistics packages are fine, but I prefer Stata. Now you will be able to re-install SPSS 16 for the Macintosh. The well-known Preacher and Hayes macros for performing a bootstrapped test of mediation are designed to work only with SPSS or SAS. ~/InstallShield (directory, remove the whole thing) In this house (folder), please trash the following: In here you should find a house with your login name on it and you should go into this item. In order to resolve this issue if SPSS 16 is not removed through the uninstall process please go into the 'Users' folder on the main operating systems hard drive. The uninstall function is found with the SPSS 16 applcation in the 'Applications' folder. If you merely trashed the application folder then SPSS 16 was not uninstalled.

The reason this is happening is that the previous installation of SPSS 16 for the Macintosh was not uninstalled correctly. Resolution Subject: Completely remove the previous installation of SPSS 16 from this machine

What is the reason for this message and how can I resolve this so that I can install SPSS 16 for the Macintosh? Problem Description: I am trying to re-install SPSS 16 for the Macintosh and I am unable to do so because during the installation I am met with an error message telling me that there is already a previous flavor of SPSS on this machine and that it must be removed before a new install can take place.

If you want to get rid of an older version, and you haven't yet started, use the uninstaller installed with SPSS, SPSS know about the problem Remove InstallShield (probably sitting in your home directory) and start again!

You've removed all files and directories matching *spss* (and, for good measure, youve also tried *SPSS*), and you can't start again because the installer complains that you haven't removed a previous installation. If you've aborted an install and want to start again, or you just want to get some space free, you have to remove the old installation. Tells me that a there is still a previous version of SPSS 16 on my
